How to Make Sure Your Watch Is Authentic: A Buyer’s Guide

A genuine watch keeps its value, carries the manufacturer’s warranty and is built to last. Unfortunately, copies have become very convincing in photos. Before you buy – from anyone – run through these checks.

1. Buy from a seller you can visit and contact

The safest protection is a trusted seller with a real address, clear contact details and a track record. Be careful with sellers who only exist on social media, avoid phone calls, or refuse to show the watch in person or on video.

2. If the price is too good to be true, it usually is

Grey-market discounts exist, but a brand-new luxury or Swiss watch sold at a fraction of its usual price is a major red flag. Compare prices across trusted retailers before buying.

3. Check the box, papers and warranty card

  • Most brands supply a branded box, instruction booklet and a warranty card.
  • The warranty card should show the model or reference number, and ideally the serial number, the seller and the date of purchase.
  • Make sure the reference on the card matches the reference on the watch and the box label.

4. Look closely at the details

  • Printing: logos and dial text should be crisp and perfectly aligned, never blurry or uneven.
  • Finishing: genuine watches have clean edges, neat polishing and smooth bracelet links.
  • Crown and pushers: they should operate smoothly with a solid feel.
  • Case back: engravings should be sharp and match the model’s specifications.
  • Movement: a watch sold as automatic should not tick once per second like a quartz watch, and vice versa.

5. Know the model before you buy

Look up the exact reference number on the brand’s official website. Check the case size, dial colour, movement type and features – copies often get small details wrong, such as a date window in the wrong place or a missing function.

6. Keep your proof of purchase

Always keep your receipt or invoice together with the warranty card. You will need them for warranty service and they add value if you ever sell the watch.
