A beautiful watch only looks its best when it fits you. The same model can look elegant on one wrist and oversized on another, so before you fall in love with a dial, take two minutes to find your ideal size.
Step 1: Measure your wrist
Wrap a soft measuring tape (or a strip of paper) around your wrist just below the wrist bone, where you would wear a watch. Note the measurement in centimetres.
Step 2: Match your wrist to a case size
Case diameter is the width of the watch case, not including the crown. As a starting point:
- Under 15 cm wrist: 28–36 mm cases look balanced and refined.
- 15–17 cm wrist: 36–40 mm – the most versatile range for everyday and dress watches.
- 17–19 cm wrist: 39–42 mm suits most sports and dress styles.
- Over 19 cm wrist: 42 mm and above can wear comfortably, especially for divers and chronographs.
These are guidelines, not rules. Many women love the bold look of a 38–40 mm watch, and many men choose a classic 36–38 mm for a timeless, understated feel.
Step 3: Check the lug-to-lug length
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the top of the watch to the bottom, across the strap attachments. It matters even more than diameter: the lugs should not extend past the edges of your wrist. A 40 mm watch with short lugs can wear smaller than a 38 mm watch with long ones.
Step 4: Consider thickness and style
- Dress watches are usually slim (under 10 mm) so they slip under a shirt cuff.
- Divers and chronographs are often 12–15 mm thick and feel more substantial.
- Square and rectangular watches (like a tank style) wear larger than their size suggests, so go a little smaller.
Step 5: Choose the right strap
A metal bracelet makes a watch look slightly larger and more formal; leather or fabric straps make it feel lighter and more relaxed. Bracelets can be adjusted by removing links, so a perfect fit is always possible.
